Parents generally want only the best for their children. When considering issues around child safety, things like car seats and protective sports gear come to mind. Arizona families trust that what their children play with is completely safe. Unfortunately, toys and other products for kids that can pose a hidden danger sometimes hit the market before they can be stopped, creating the possibility of product liability. Toy company Fisher-Price recently issued a recall for several thousand toy electric cars due to the danger they may pose to kids.
The toy is called the Power Wheels Barbie Dream Camper. It is a small, battery-operated toy car designed for young children to drive and ride around in, and it includes a play kitchen and other accessories. Fisher-Price has admitted via their Facebook page that there is a defect in the gas pedal that may cause the toy to keep running even after a child removes his or her foot from the pedal. The company reports they made the choice to recall around 44,000 of these cars after 17 reports came in regarding the defect.
Thankfully, no injuries have been reported, and Fisher-Price appears to be handling the situation properly. They have said that anyone who owns one of the cars should stop allowing their children to play with it until it is repaired. Fisher-Price has offered to do the repair for free, and consumers just have to reach out and contact them. They also stated that they have been working with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to complete the recall.
Though this scenario will hopefully result in no injuries to children, other families are not always so lucky. The family of a child here in Arizona who has been injured by a defective toy product may wish to file a civil claim against a toy manufacturer or other responsible parties. A successfully litigated product liability claim could result in monetary damages that would cover the associated costs of a physical injury or emotional trauma.
